Medical

Surgical filming and live surgery broadcasting since 1993.

Over the years, we have developed video solutions for physicians, surgeons, medical societies, meeting and congress organizers, pharmaceutical companies and surgical device manufacturers.

Experience

More than 300 live surgeries, some 1,500 hours of live surgery.

We have produced more than 300 live surgeries, working with a great many specialists from around the world.

Innovation

As early as the 1990s, we were the first to broadcast live surgeries on two parallel screens, showing competing surgical techniques for the same indications. This approach, with real teaching value, quickly became established in gynecologic surgery.

Where we work

Today we work throughout France, across Europe and worldwide: links between two countries (France–USA, France–India, France–Belgium…) or within a single country (Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, UK, USA…).

What we do

Two distinct services, and they don't call for the same resources.

Surgical videos

Filming and recording procedures to produce an edited video of a surgical technique. The films can be enhanced with voice-over, CGI animation, key words and scientific diagrams.

Editing a surgical video usually takes a lot of time: hours of footage to select with care. When needed, our teams, who are familiar with surgical techniques, can produce a rough cut on their own, without a physician, which makes the work more efficient and frees up the surgeon's time.

Live surgeries

Two-way, live video and audio between a surgical team and an audience in a conference hall. The surgeon explains the technique live, the audience asks questions and joins the discussion.

The quality of the two-way audio is essential: people must be able to talk to each other naturally, free from any technical constraint.

Surgical filming

A view often better than the surgeon's own.

We use remotely controlled cameras on an articulated arm that can take any position over the surgical field; the camera sits above and in line with the procedure.

The surgeon always sees what the audience sees, on a high-definition monitor placed in front of them. They can focus on the procedure and hold a productive discussion with the moderator and the audience, without worrying about image, sound or transmission — or about our crew's compliance with sterile technique.

Our teams are prepared and trained to work in the most demanding surgical environments.

We produce surgical videos and live surgeries in fields as varied as

  • Orthopedicsshoulder, elbow, knee, hip, spine, foot, hand — open or arthroscopic surgery
  • Gynecologyvaginal surgery, laparoscopy, breast surgery, fertility surgery
  • Urology
  • Maxillofacial surgery

Transmission

Every live broadcast is planned in detail and tested on site.

We use different transmission methods, depending on the specific constraints of each meeting. There are many technical options, and they don't all allow the same things.

Nearby venues

Within the same hospital complex, we install a dedicated fiber-optic link for the event. Fiber carries HD, 4K or 3D with no loss of quality — the image is exceptional. A single fiber can carry many signals: a dual video program, two-way audio, a technical intercom with the hall. We use 300-meter sections that can be joined to connect the operating room to the conference hall.

Remote venues

Preparing a live surgery

A successful live surgery also depends on careful preparation.

Before the event

  • Site surveys and technical studies
  • Meetings with surgeons and operating room managers
  • Microwave link modeling and relay sites if needed
  • Handling permit and authorization requests
  • Recommending the best-suited transmission method
  • Managing the web page hosting the event, for web streaming
  • Network coordination with the hospital's IT and technical teams
  • Bandwidth simulation and testing

The day before and during the event

  • Setup, cabling and final tests in line with the surgical schedule
  • Managing the technical crews
  • Welcoming and equipping the operating surgeons
  • Briefing with the surgeons on camera positions for the key steps of the procedure
  • Integrating clinical case presentations

After the event

  • Debriefing with the operators
  • Audience statistics for the web stream
  • Delivery of the recordings and of the edited videos produced afterwards

A collaboration of more than 20 years, always rich in ideas. Tamarana always listens to our needs and elevates them with new techniques, animation, and superb images and renderings. A true partnership, and consistently outstanding work.
